All things new

With almost 12 months having passed since the equine influenza outbreak hit, one local horse stud has welcomed the first of it’s new arrivals, a sure sign that the industry is recovering.

Paul and Julie Wardell of Gloucester River have been waiting anxiously to see the outcomes of last year’s season when they used for the first time the the black colt, St Ronan Abdul Smoke that they purchased at the Dalby Australian Stock Horse Sale in Queensland in 2006. They used Smoke over all their mares last year and this foal is the first of many for the 2008 season.

The colt foal is out of Elle Astra, a mare that has bred 10 fillies and four colts for Paul and Julie producing many Sydney Royal winners. “Mardi” as she is known, was acquired by the Wardells as a yearling 17 years ago.

With spring approaching the Wardell’s are gearing up for a busy breeding season when they will be standing four stallions.
