Down on the farm

19/11/2008 4:00:00 AM
There’s a cliché about never working with children or animals.

Someone obviously forgot to tell the staff at Barrington Street Pre School and Long Day Care Centre as they headed out with a bus load of excited kids to visit a farm, and survived to tell the tale.

Courtesy of Newcombes Coaches many of the children had their first bus ride as they headed out to Chris and Sally Maslen’s farm.

It was a day packed with adventure.

There was feeding the one day old calves their milk by bottle and meeting the working dogs.

A trip to the dairy to see how 400 cows are milked morning and afternoon and a chance to pretend to drive a tractor and a quad bike.

Then there were baby chickens and fluffy rabbits to cuddle and a chance to meet a horse, courtesy of Sally’s mum Diane from Camp Cobark.

Fueled by a snack and a drink the children were put out to pasture, and a quick game of pretend, being rabbits and horses running through the long grass.

Barrington Street staff extended their thanks to all those involved, Newcombes Coaches, Camp Cobark and Chris and Sally Maslen for making the excursion possible.

For the children it was an insight into farm life and it has inspired some creative and dramatic play for many days since.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
