Gloucester junior cattle show 2008

27/08/2008 5:00:00 AM
This year Junior Show continued the success of previous years with the involvement of just short of 90 kids from preschoolers through to year 12.

The purpose of the show is to introduce kids to cattle showing, both beef and dairy. Over the years it’s provided the start for many young people who have gone on to bigger and better things in cattle preparation, parading and judging. On the day participants are required to prepare animals, show them in their classes and also compete in age group parading classes.

Those involved in preparing the cattle prior to the day are assessed throughout the day for herdsman awards. Instructional talks are given on cattle judging and parading. The success of a combined beef and dairy cattle judging competition over the past years ensured its continuation this year, with Akubra hats and leather halters as prizes.

Shows such as this can’t happen without the support of the community and for their contributions the organising committee would like to thank the following: the judges, Murray Poulson and David Payne, beef herdsman judges Bruce and Helen Scrivener, dairy herdsman judges Sally Maslen and John Radford, chief stewards Ashley Hollingsworth and Tim Wilson with their many helpers, Karen Bratfield and her lady helpers in the canteen and elsewhere, Brian Middlebrook and Marj Woodford in the announcers and recording box, the farmers who donated the use of their cattle for the day, the stock carriers who donated their services for the day and Geoff Adams for providing sound.

The parents certainly showed up and deserve a vote of thanks for supporting the day, it was perhaps our best attendance in some time.

The sponsors also play a major role in the shows very existence so a big thanks to: Rotary, Wingham Abattoirs, Lucas Energy, Ditchfield Contracting, Leighton Mining, Webb Bros, Gooch Agency, Elders Produce, Gloucester Soldiers Club, Ridley’s Stockfeeds, Gloucester Rural Supplies, Gloucester Shire Council, Country Energy, Gloucester Pet Supplies, Ellis and Butler Pty Ltd, Atlas Rope and Cordage, GWG Constructions, Avon Valley Meats, Darryls Gourmet Meats, Rosey’s Chickens, Stratford Coal, Channell’s Newsagency, Trellis Earthmoving, Gloucester Veterinary Hospital, Ridley AgriProducts, Gloucester Machinery, Gloucester Tyres and Batteries, Akubra Hats, Yates Livestock Transport, Stratford Coal, Agri-Gene and private contributors Neville McCarthy, Pauline Iburtson and the Bratfield family.

The sponsorship support this year was tremendous, it’s good to see the community get behind the show.

To run a cattle show without cattle would be extremely difficult, so to the cattle donors that quietened and prepared animals for the kids a big thanks. They include Steven Relf, Tim Wilson, Trevor and Kelly Middlebrook, the Forbes, Giltrow, Kernahan and Green families and the High School.

The committee’s organised Primary School visits appeared to pay dividends with an increase in the number of younger kids participating, however numbers of younger High School students were well down, with overall numbers up on last year.

The success of the day can be judged by the smiling faces and this year there were plenty. More and more of the younger primary aged kids are getting involved, this is particularly pleasing and is mainly due to the support of local farmers in the beef and dairy industries.

Thanks must go out to the members of the organising committee for their tireless work in the build up to the show and their contributions on the day. Mal Graham and his band of helpers did a tremendous job setting up the grounds and dismantling after the show. It was good to have the “Big Fella” Brook back in the announcer’s box. Those locals who help out on the day also make the day possible and their contributions are greatly appreciated.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
