HSC 2008: It's started

22/10/2008 4:00:00 AM
Local students have joined more than 67,000 students from around the state in putting pen to paper in the 2008 Higher School Certificate examinations.

The HSC officially started last Thursday with one of the first examinations, Business Studies. This was followed on Friday by the only mandatory subject in the HSC, English.

Students at Gloucester High School said the Business Studies paper was “okay” and felt comfortable with their preparation. A couple said there was a few moments where they had a mental blank but that soon passed.

Business Studies is the third most popular subject in the 2008 HSC, with around one-quarter of all HSC candidates studying the subject.

It ranks behind English and Mathematics as the subjects studied by the most students, while almost half of all HSC students are studying at least one science course.

Over five weeks 67, 931 HSC students, the largest group ever to complete Year 12 in NSW, will sit examinations for 110 different courses ranging from English to Latin and Physics to Drama. Most students will sit six exam papers.

The HSC examinations finish on November 13.

HSC results will be available to students by internet, SMS message and telephone on December 17. The following day UAI rankings will be available online. HSC student results summaries and written UAI ranking advice will be received by mail on December 19.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
