Keeping the meals wheels moving

27/08/2008 5:00:00 AM
Today is National Meals on Wheels Day.

It’s the day that the tireless efforts of some 80,000 volunteers are acknowledged for their work in delivering meals.

In Gloucester there are 85 volunteers who are on the Meals on Wheels delivery roster, delivering meals to 35 people. The service also employs two staff, Megan de Witte and Jackie Battaglini.

Among the Meals on Wheels volunteers are Stein Grusinga and Joy Wilson who have been volunteering on a meals run for what they said was too many years to count.

The pair said they enjoyed delivery meals and couldn’t see they’d be giving up anytime soon.

Stein also has two other volunteers she works with, being rostered on three times a month for a job that she thoroughly enjoys.

Australian Meals on Wheels president Leon Holmes said the day was about recognising the efforts of the organisation’s volunteers and staff.

“We are already a critically important part of our clients’ lives. They count on us for affordable, nutritious meals and regular friendly contact.

“Our people provide more than just a meal to our clients, they offer friendship, social interaction and a friendly smile,” he said.

If you would like more information on Meals on Wheels or would like to volunteer, call Megan or Jackie at the office on 6558 2008 or call in and see them at 75 Church Street, Gloucester.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
