 Hawks turn to chickens

Hawks turn to chickens

14/05/2008 4:00:00 AM
First home game for the Maggies on a day more conducive for beach volley ball than football with the bright sun beaming through thinly scattered cloud.

The Magpies flock at Bertie’s Oval ready to battle with the competition leaders, the Abermain Hawks. A huge win over Woodberry last week had all the Maggies in high spirits for a good hard game again – and that’s how it started. With some big hits up the middle by both sides, Simon Smelly Hitchcock and Daniel Dribbler Tull showing us how it was done.

It wasn’t long before the Maggies broke through the Hawk’s defence to put points on the board keeping Gav Saddler throwing numbers everywhere trying to keep up (thanks for your help Gav).

After some very good defence in the first 30 minutes, keeping the opposition scoreless and asking all kinds of questions – eventually one was answered as they found space out wide and got a valuable try just before half time.

To the Gatorade break Cranky Franky got our minds back on to the task at hand with some stern words said. So the Maggies took to the field in the second half ready to bring it home in front of the massive crowd swarming in front of the beer tent, guzzling and cheering.

Again the Magpies, after some great defence break through the line giving them more points (are you awake Gav?).

When the Maggies were working the ball out after some great goal line defence it can only be seen as the best pass of the day by Mick Shultz hitting his target at long range on the chest, as there was only one problem – it was the Abermain fullback who snaffles it and runs away to score (but it was a good pass).

This didn’t phase the Maggies as they kicked off and belted a mistake out of the Hawk’s attack and found a very very quick winger in Chops Galvin to bag a great try in corner which I believe is his first for his career.

Again the Magpies working up the middle when the two young guns get together for what looked like an Alfy Langer type chip over the top by Rob Parish with Hayden Flash Tull screaming in support to get off the nutty run with another great try under the sticks.

To wrap it up it was a good win for the Maggies taking us to the top of the ladder outright with great games had by all players.

Next week we travel to Morisset to do battle down there. Final score 48-10.

Try scorers: Hayden Tull (1), Rob Parish (2) goals 5/9, Dale Galvin (1), Dan Tull (1), Luke Allardice (1), Frank Compton (1), Mitch Turnbull (1), Steve Watts (1).

Points went to: L Allardice, R Parish, M Shultz, H Tull, M Kelleher.

Late mail: We need to find out who was cut off at the Avon Valley Inn before the chooks went to roost (he may have had the mug). Maggies great in 08.
