Junior Magpies drought has broken!

20/08/2008 5:00:00 AM
A decade long drought has been broken for the Gloucester Magpies Junior Rugby League, who now has a team which qualified through to the Group 3 Junior Rugby League 2008 Finals Series.

Semi Finals. (Saturday August 16).

Forster – Tuncurry hosted the Group 3 Junior Rugby League Semi Finals at their new Football stadium. Gloucester Magpies Junior Rugby League Under 10 team quailifed through to the Semi Finals by finishing 4th on the minor premiers table, meaning each game from here on in, is a elimination game.

Our first opponents for our quest to the grand final was Forster – Tuncurry, who finished fifth on the minor premiers table.

The first half started in front of a very large crowd, with many of the Gloucester supporters making the early morning drive over to watch the boys, and they were not to be disappointed. Gloucester was the first to score, through some great ball movement to take a 6 – 0 lead.

From the restart Gloucester turned the ball over which lead to Forster being able to level the score at 6 - 6. The first half saw both teams with many attacking opportunities, only to be turned away with some determined defence from both sides.

Forster - Tuncurry scored on the bell to take a 12 – 6 lead at the break.

The second half started with our Gloucester boys scoring in the first minutes, leveling the score at 12 – 12.

From that moment, the game was really on with both teams playing a very high standard of attacking play. Gloucester was next to score, taking a 16 – 12 lead. But once again Forster – Tuncurry was able to hit back straight away, to lock the score at 16 – 16. From this point, Gloucester seemed to step up to another level, which Forster – Tuncurry was not able to match. Backline movements were the features from Gloucester and were able to score at will. Racing away with a 32 – 16 result, which was the final score. It could be easy to say that this was a very convincing win to our U10 boys, but it was a result of great defence which set up Gloucester U10’s for this win.

Try scores: Luke Boorer (2 tries), Ben Relf (3 tries) and Liam O’Neil (1 try).

Conversions: Cordell Latham, Liam O’Neil, Logan Penfold and Ben Relf.

Players player was the whole team. Well done boys.

Saturday August 23, is the Group 3 Junior League Preliminary Finals at Port Macquarie. Gloucester Magpies U10 team vs Wauchope at 9.40 am. Come along and support our

Junior Magpies, who have come such a long way in only 2 years of playing the game.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
