Junior Magpies gallant in defeat

27/08/2008 5:00:00 AM
Saturday August 23, Port Macquarie’s Regional Sports Stadium, hosted the Group 3 Junior Rugby League preliminary Finals.

In south to south west gale force winds, 30 to 40 knots, Gloucester U10 Magpies were up against Wauchope. Due to a washed out weekend in the 2008 weekly draw, this was the first time these two teams have faced each other for this season.

The first half whistle blew, Gloucester had the advantage, running with the wind. At each kick off, the Magpies let out a war cry as they ran in to tackle Wauchope. Their spirits high from last weekend win. At the ten minute mark Luke Boorer was over for the Magpies and Liam O’Neil kicking the conversion. 6 – 0. Wauchope realizing that Gloucester has come a long way since last season, had to lift their game. Our defence line held strong, keeping Wauchope held up a few times on our line. Then with a big push Wauchope finally got through. 6 – 6.

Again the war cry went out at the kick off, game on. Just before the half time whistle Wauchope was over again. But due to the wind’s assistance the conversion was unsuccessful. 10 – 6 Wauchope.

Second half, playing in to the wind, our boys shocked Wauchope with some very big tackles. Wauchope replying with some dirty tactics which went unnoticed by the ref. With unlimited reserves, Wauchope used all their

Reserves, to their advantage over Gloucester. With our boys starting to tire and the wind buffeting in to them, Wauchope worked the game down the wings and went over for 3 more tries. Full time score 28 – 6 Wauchope.

With good sportsmanship and a couple of bloody noses the U10 Magpies congratulated Wauchope on their win. Now qualifying through to the finals.

Congratulations to: Luke Boorer, Liam O’Neil, Brodie O’Brien, Curtis Landers, Ben Relf, Jye Barkwell, Dakota Ellis, Brodie Gorton, Harley Kelly, William Miller, Logan Penfold, Josh Wilson, Justin Berry and Cordell Latham (out sick), for such an amazing result this season. Thank you to

Clay Boorer (U9s) who stepped up as reserve, for the last two games.

Well done again boys, well done.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
