Saturday afternoon, a windy, cold and drizzly squall blew across Berties Oval for the last competition round for the Maggies who were up against the 3rd placed team, Abermain Hawks.
This encounter which most likely isn’t there last was portrayed as the first final in the Maggies camp.
That’s just how the game started for the Maggies scoring out wide in the first few minutes with Luke Allardice chasing top try scorer for the competition.
After that easy try the Maggies seemed to drop off a little in enthusiasm which Abermain used to their advantage pressing forward with some good metres gained. The Maggies regathered and got their game plan back together which saw Magpies centre Lukey Allardice scoring another good try, still chasing that milestone.
The first half went up and down with points being scored by both teams but Maggies always on top of the Hawks who rested their so called top players for the finals.
After a massive first half Cranky Franky wasn’t happy with the performance and asked for a bit more from his forwards to hold the middle.
So with a belly full of staminade the Maggies hit Berties Oval trying for a fresh start which didn’t happen with the top try scorer for Abermain and the competition going in the early stages leaving the Maggies closer than comfortable.
That try seemed to stir up a certain hornet’s nest in the forwards with massive hits in defence by big Grizz Shultz and is my lip split Hitchcock. These good hits in defence set the platform for the rest of the game for the backs to put points on the board. Maggies ran out winners 52-22 with a rest next week while the other top four teams do battle for their spot.
Points went to: Mick Shultz 3 points players player; Rob Parish 2 points; Daniel Tull one point; Scott Young one point.
In two weeks Maggies will have their first final at Raymond Terrace with a supporters bus going down, so please put your name down at the Avon Valley Inn.
Late mail, Who am I? I went to catch the ball on the weekend in the footy game and dropped it cold. Second attempt I called for the ball and then watched it go over the dead ball line. Then in the dying minutes I opened my big mouth and got sent for 10 minutes. I also once tried to get raffle tickets at midnight.
Please guess who and put answers in at the pub.
There is a website for the Maggies which was set up by our talented forward, Simon Hitchcock. www.gloucestermagpies.leaguenet.com.au. Thanks Simon.
