Wow, what a night for men’s tennis. Three matches were decided on the barest of margins, one game.
In the last set of the night Hedditches were wining five-nil only to be beaten in a tie breaker and consequently losing the match 36 to 35 to Coxes. This is par for the course for Coxes, nearly all their matches have been won or lost by the barest of margins.
Suttons managed to beat Barlows 29 to 28 in a very hard fought tussle. This makes Suttons outright competition leaders. Great to see Brian Barlow having a run after his stint with tennis elbow.
It was a much anticipated grudge match between Williams and Greens, with the two Garner boys at opposite ends of the court.
Alex and his team managed to beat his dad’s team 40 to 39, which culminated in a tie breaker in the very last set.
Despite Mark not playing regularly, last week he was really firing with most of his screamers going in.
Kingstons beat Hollingsworth 42 to 35 even without their keenest member. Kingstons did have a class floater in the form of Ian Bullivant. Kingstons star member was observed coming to the clubhouse surreptitiously around 10.15 to check on the results of matches. He’ll be pleased to know that Kingstons are now in equal second position, only two points behind competition leaders Williams.
Malones had their second win of the season beating Redmans 28 to 28. It’s great to see the improvement in Jacob Redman, especially now he has a new racquet.
Steven Higgins played a sizzler of a game even after suffering a broken hand earlier in the season.
He put a couple of serves into Greg Ryan which even Lleyton Hewitt would have trouble returning. Great to see captain Rhino back for team Ryan after his long layout. Stevies won 30 to 24 on the night.
Three Little Higgs showed no mercy on Carruthers by deciding the result of the match in just four sets.
Next week, semi finals commence. As we have one week up our sleeves this year, should it be wet on the night, the semis (and consequently all other finals) will be put back a week.
Point score:
A Grade: Williams 16, Hollingsworth 10; 3 Little Higgs 14; Kingstons 14; Greens 6; Carruthers 6.
B Grade: Redmans 3; Hedditch 13; Ryans 10; Suttons 18; Stevies 10; Barlows 13; Cox 15; Malones 4.
