Sunday 10 August opened crisp and clear, with our Fullbore shooters getting a bright start from the demanding 700 yard mound. Master of precision Bruce Jones registered a fantastic 183/200 in open free-class, as a breeze started wafting, and Stephen Tamassy and Laurie Smith followed with a respectable 166 and 164 in rising unpredictable gusts. In standard and optical class, Ron Cranfield demonstrated his experience with a well earned 89.1/100, leading Terry Cox and Steve Pennicuik on a creditable 82.2 and 76.0. To appreciate wind effect at this distance – a 90 degree gust of a mere 6kph (easy walking speed) will push a shot 50cm from centre, whilst the bulleye radius on the 5-ring target is just 20cm, the 10 in freeclass a trifling 5.8cm.

In rimfire at 50 metres Bruce Jones led the way with a smashing 249/250, followed closely by Jean Cook and Terry Cox on 242, Fred Baumann on 239, Steve Pennicuik (using the Club’s temperamental Voere) on 227, and brand-new member Jenny Boyd with a great start on 224. Even at 1080fps (329 metres/second), a bit of wind can take these little 40 grain (2.6 gram) pills for a merry ride.

Our next club shoot will be on Sunday 24 August, with Fullbore from 300 metres, and 25M Rimfire. We welcome visitors on our shoot days, and enquiries regarding club activities and firearms licensing arrangements may be made to Stephen Tamassy on 65584346 or Peter Psaltis on 65580910.

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
