Division 2
Bardwell v Tull. Pam played a commanding role at the net in an even match where Tulls (Kelli, Colleen and Nikola_ took the winners’ two points finishing with games 31/21 and sets four to two.
Only one tiebreak set, many deuces and good serving throughout the match by all six players.
Di Bardwell played in both sets won by her team firstly with Pam and then the fifth set with Heather. Pam and Heather held a 5/3 lead only to lose the resulting tiebreak third set to Nikola and Colleen. Good tennis.
Green v Parish. Bell, Mae and Kalen took charge early in the Court 2 match against Robyn, Ruth (for Shona) and Di to win all six sets, 36/14. Robyn persevered but did not have the strength for the famous slammers, her trademark shot.
Kalen produced some Irish luck with many returns just dropping over the net for winners. A low scoring match.
Simmons v Waters. Julie Lyford played for Leighanne Simmons and had the added pressure to keep the team’s winning margin intact. The opposing No 1 Carmel Best was floating also for Irene Waters.
Quite a few love games were evident showing the Simmons’ team strength with Mercia and Elona taking both sets 6/1 over Leanne and Sue.
Carmel, Leanne and Sue all served aces rather than get into a rally with Simmons. Well done Simmons.
Division 1
Higgins v Laurie. In a gold medal performance, Laurie, (Lyn, Julie Forbes and Sharrone) finally took the winners’ two points to record their first win in this current winter competition over Sue, Cheryl and Lorraine.
The win, 4 sets/28 to 2 sets/24 revealed the quality tennis this team is capable of with Lyn playing top tennis, Julie winning her four sets displaying strong volleying at the net and fierce serving and Sharrone as solid as always with her returns.
Higgins also played well, Laurie took the lead at the fourth set, Higgins leading by one at the fifth with Julie and Sharrone taking a convincing final set win over Cheryl and Lorraine. Sue and Lyn evenly matched.
Good, long rallies throughout. Well, done Lauries.
Holstein v Pearson. Opening with a tiebreak win, Holstein continued to take the sets only to lose the final set to Sue Webb (for Judy) and Jeanette Relf.
Jean won her four sets hampered by slight injuries but still produced a tradesman like performance. Pearsons were all positive at the net, winning many points, Sue and Gai running the baseline to retrieve and return winners. The comment was made “no aces today” just prior to Barbara slipping one under Sue’s racquet – now that’s a rarity.
Thank you to Cheryl who managed to keep Jean cool when she was watering the adjoining court. Holstein 5 sets/34.
Richardson v Germon. After four sets, each team had won two sets, Jane, Julie Munn and Fay led by one game, the fifth set went to Jane and Fay 6/3 and then the icing on the cake with a final set win to Julie and Fay over Kim and Monica.
The rallies were so long in the early sets, this Court 6 match was well behind the other courts finishing so late they almost missed afternoon tea and that will never do.
Jane and Bev were evenly matched, using the entire court to return while Julie Munn dominated over Kim as did Fay over Monica in set wins. Kim won the meat voucher.
A gold medal match. Richardson 4 sets/33 to 2 sets/26.
Thank you teams 2, the lunch was delicious; and to Paddy for your work in the kitchen, thank you, Germon from Division 1 and Simmons Division 2 on duty tomorrow.
