Gloucester tennis ladies have been invited to the open day at Krambach, on Sunday August 31 to play on their new grass courts commencing at 10am. Why not get a group together to help Krambach celebrate and have a great social day of tennis.

Thank you to teams Germon and Simmons who supplied lunch last Thursday and to everyone who assisted in our fundraising. It is hoped our male counterparts will oblige similarly with the 100 club donations. Special thanks to Carmel and Ruth who were prepared to do kitchen duty for us. Tomorrow teams Laurie and Parish will be on kitchen duty.

Division 1:

Results from last Thursday, Germon v Pearson. Betty had two floaters in lieu of Judy and Jeanette and could not have been happier with their monumental effort. Sue Kingston played for Judy and Bernie McMinn returned to the courts after a long absence and played a great standard of tennis. Betty and Bernie won both sets 6/1 over Bev and Monica to keep the team well into the match. Germons led 20/19 with one set to play, Kim and Monica repeating their 6/4 success from set 3, to win the match 4 sets 26 to 2 sets 23. Kim won her four sets, Bernie won the ace tally.

Higgins v Richardson. Sue and Lorraine continue to be a dominant pairing to win both sets over Jane and Fay, 6/1 in set 2 but having to work harder in the repeat set when taken to a tiebreak. Jane’s trio led by 4 games and won the final set to love to win by 10 games. Sonia played for Cheryl to oppose an inform Julie Munn who won 4 sets displaying her never-give-in ability to wear down the opposition. Sue was trying to play on the bowling green and with Jane shared the double faults, no aces on court 2. Long rallies, good tennis. Richardson 4 sets 30 to 2 sets 20.

Holstein v Laurie. Jean, Barbara and Gai came out of the block firing, but Laurie’s had tasted their first match success the previous week and were not prepared to give in easily. Sharrone continues to play great tennis, so reliable, ably assisted by Elaine Murray (for Lyn) and Julie Forbes who all got better as each set progressed. Jean and Barbara led 5/0 in set 4, Elaine said “they have got all they’re getting,” Julie started serving aces and with a complete reversal, Lauries took the tiebreak set, 9/7. Gai did all the running for Holsteins, Sharrone won her 4 sets, many sidelines included, and led Laurie’s to a convincing 5 sets to 1, 31/22 deserved win. A good match played in a sporting manner.

Pointscore: Higgins 28½, Holstein 28½, Germon 43½, Laurie 17½, Richardson 39½, Pearson 19½.

Division 2:

Bardwell v Parish. Di, Pam and Heather added 4½ points to their competition tally from the five sets to one win over Parish. Annette Thomas finally was able to play, this time for Robyn. Shona and Di Mansfield managed a 6/3 final set win for team Parish over Pam and Heather who had won the first encounter. Annette was unable to wear down Di Bardwell who took the four sets with her usual steady play, lobbing over the net player and serving well. Good long rallies between the No 1 and 2 players in a low scoring match.

Simmons v Tull. Colleen had two relieving players in Dawn Sohier and Paddy Stevens who with Colleen managed to do what was thought to be the impossible, ie, taking 3 sets from Leighanne, Mercia and Elona who most were thinking to be impregnable. Simmons commenced with the “usual” 6/0, Dawn and Paddy united to win 6/2, the first of the 3 sets to be won by Tulls. However Simmons with a 6/0 in two sets were never threatened or behind in games at any stage. All players won two of their four sets. Well done Tulls but a win to Simmons, 3 sets all, 30/20.

Green v Waters. Sally Martin played for Sue in a match which had 3 tiebreak sets, two wins to Waters. Both sets played by Bell and Kalen against Irene and Sally resulted in a win and a loss to each team. Good rallies in these tiebreakers. Sally and Leanne won their tiebreak over Mae and Kalen. The much improved Kalen produced the shot of the day with a low flying return from an impossible position. All players had some funny misses but all six were on top of their game. A great match, good rallies, Leanne serving well. Greens just too consistent winning 4 sets 34 to 2 sets 25.

Point score: Green 31, Bardwell 26½, Simmons 57½, Parish 12½, Waters 25½, Tull 24½.

Tennis, don’t you just love it!

16/12/2008 | So we now have desperate parents attempting to bribe teachers to get their children into a selective high school. What a sad indictment of our education policies, the holy grail of which is parental choice.
